Although all penguins are well used to for underwater hunting, this does not mean that the food they always gets easy. In this respect, American researcher G. Kuymenom with colleagues obtained very interesting data. They provide data on the three king penguins on South Georgia, which carries special sensors. In the colony, where the penguins were engaged in breeding of chicks, one of them was absent 4, the second - 6, the third - 8 days. The first in a time at sea has made 1,217 dives, the second - 488, third - 890. So many have to dive because only 10% of cases can catch prey. Approximately half of the dive was to 50 m, deeper than the rest - for the 100 and even 200 m.
Penguins eat fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans. Drink sea and fresh water, swallow the snow. Growth of the smallest penguins - 40 cm, weight - 2 pounds. Largest - 1 meter, 15 kilograms (royal), 1,2 m, 30 - 45 pounds (imperial).
First catches mainly small fish and krill, and the second - largest krill and fish. The South Shetland Islands macaroni penguins' produces small krill, fish and Atlantic - a major krill. According to the calculations of the French scientists, Jean Mogen's and J. Prevost eaten all the birds of the Southern Ocean food for about 85% are accounted for penguins. Neither more nor less than it is about 47 million tons, of which more than half falls on krill and other crustaceans, and about a quarter in the squid. |
