What Do Moths Eat

Moths and butterflies are related to each other with many similarities. Many people do not have any idea about what do moths eat. Moths try to feed only liquid food with the help of their long tube like tongue which is called proboscis. They try to gather their feed from the nector which is present in various different flowers, animal droppings and fruits. Moths never eat clothes but the larvae eat the cloth. Few moths also gain the necessary nutrients from the muddy soil.  Its a fact that moths after reaching the adult stage, never consume anything. During the larvae stage they try to gain all the necessary nutrients that are needed to complete its life cycle from various flowers and fruits. The female moth lays eggs under the leaves or on a silk cloth before it reaches the stage of pupa. The pupal stage is estimated as four years. Few moths reach the adult stage with in three months.

What Do Moths Eat

Wollen and silk clothes contain a protien called keratin and this protein is snacked by few moths after which they try to convert this keratin into food. This is also present in bedding, fur, feathers and carpets. Moths live in dark places and they do not try to damage your clothes. There are nearly more than one lakh different types of moths present in this world. The larvae of moths are said to be caterpillars and this is the second stage in a moths life history of growing from a small egg to an adult stage. Moth balls can be used to keep the moths away from clothes but you can not kill the larvae as they will be already present.

Children may be very curious to know what do moths eat. Moths are not at all harmful to human beings. They never make any holes to your clothing or cause any damage. Among all the clothing, moths mostly like wollen clothing a lot and they can not eat synthetic or cotton clothes. Clothes can be stored safely to avoid the moths by dry cleaning the clothes or using moth balls that can be spread near your clothes in your cup boards. The cup boards or boxes need to be sealed tightly with out any dampness to completely avoid moths. Adult female moths are larger in size than males and the coloration is also different betweem males and females. Few moths which are very particular in their food feed only on selective plants forever.
