Ants are undeniably determined and exceptionally hardworking not a single bum can be found. But what do ants eat? This a kind of insect who literally got some sweet tooth to begin with, but what do they eat? Practically speaking ants do not have anything in particular. They scavenge around for whatever humans got left lying around but in general they go for sweet stuff. Because of their hardworking nature, ants spends their entire day looking around for food and stores them for future consumption they very enduring and amazingly strong creatures, actually they are one of the strongest animal on the planet being able to lift objects three times their weight. Ants assembles a colony, like a small civilization ruled by royalties in their case a queen, they are divided into several positions to do a specific task in the colony. The greater numbers of ants in the colony were hunters; their task is to hunt for food and ants actually has excellent tracking ability to search for food in great distances. Do you ever wonder how ants able to tell others where the food source are? The chemical called pheromones is used by ants to create a path. After finding the food source they would first hold a first for themselves until they are full, then they will call the rest of the scouts (food hunters) to follow the trail and begin transporting the rest of the food back to the colony. The type of food that we are talking about actually depends on the type of the ants as well. Common ants go for human foods, while fire ants use their sting to disable an insect and devour them, some go after flowers, fruits and plant leaves. They eat almost anything even the honeydew ants eat secreted waste from other insects who feed on saps. One distinctive component found on every ant's diet is sugar (mainly), protein rich foods found in nuts and oil.
Going back to honeydew ants, since they dine on other insects waste like leaf hoppers for an instance, ants provide protection to these insects in exchange for their waste, working in mutual relationship is a result of ants another exceptional behavior which is the ability to create harmonious and beneficial relationship to its environment. So what do ants really eat? Bottom line is, anything sweet and sugary will do for them. Forest ants sometimes go for a rather rare item. Wood ants eats cellulose from woods which other insects don't really consume, some misconceptions suggests wood ants to eat wood but its not really them its the termite who does that. Another rare item on their menu is fungus; they eat fungus that grows from the pile of leaves they kept underground. Ants are not a constant nuisance as long as you keep your own food properly. |
